Information for PhD students

The Course will be held at the Scientific Campus SOGESTA (Loc. Crocicchia, Urbino, Italy). In this occasion the final year PhD students are invited to present the results of their research projects with a poster.

The interested PhD students are asked to send an abstract to Prof. Antonello Mai (antonello.mai@uniroma1.it) and to Prof. Americo Salvatori (americo.salvatori@uniurb.it) following the instructions reported in the Guides, no later than April 16.

Instructions for the preparation of abstract full-length papers to be included in the ESMEC 2010 Proceedings

TEMPLATE: Abstract must be structured in sections, as follows.
  • Background (< 80 words): Provide one-two statements outlining the research field and its importance, briefly putting the piece of work into the context.
  • Aims (< 70 words): Which issues did you set to address?
  • Methods (< 100 words): Describe the main methodological aspects.
  • Results: Provide a report/discussion of the most important findings (< 500 words); insert herein good-resolution image scheme/s, chart/s, table/s and/or figure/s directly in the text, where appropriate.
  • Conclusion (< 80): Highlight the take-home-message of the research work.
  • References: As a rule, they should not exceed 4 reff.
In order to harmonize the editing template, please carefully read the following standards.
  • FILE: Microsoft Word
  • PAPER SIZE: A4 (European standard)
  • NUMBER OF PAGES: Maximum 2 pages

Guide to the preparation of the poster presentation

The poster, written in English, should summarize the research carried out during the doctorate, referring to what has already been outlined in the abstract.
Poster Size: 100 cm x 120 cm.
To put up the poster use only drawing pins.

Presenters are asked to mount their posters on sunday, July 4, from 7.00 pm on at the SOGESTA Scientific Campus. During the buffet dinner there will be an informal discussion of posters.

The Poster discussion will be held during two sessions on Monday, 5th from 14.30 to 15.15 and on Tuestday, 6th from 12.00 to 13.30.

The final timetable of the presentations will be published on this site within two weeks from the beginning of the school.

Some selected posters will be discussed on Thursday, 8th from 14.45 to 18.00.

It is suggested that PhD students prepare some summarizing transparencies for the possible oral discussion (about 13 + 2 minutes).

Poster discussion and selected oral communications will be given in English.

Suggestions for the preparation of the oral presentations
  • Organize the presentation in four sections:
    • Introduction: Precisely define the importance of the topic you dealt with, describing it in a general perspective taking into account the scientific background of the audience.
    • Results
    • Discussion
    • Conclusion
  • The assigned time has to be respected (about 13 + 2 minutes). Within this time you can generally present 15 transparencies.
  • IUPAC names should not be used, but you should associate numbers, simple names or acronym to the complex chemical formulas.
  • If you use sentences, please pay attention that the audience can easily read them.
  • Simplify tables and charts so that they can be readily understood.
